Additionally, this Muslim fortress had also silos and cisterns to allow the troops and the population to survive in case of attack.

During nine centuries, in the territory of Al-Andalus were built a great number of alcazabas in order to protect the population.

Some of them are still preserved and some examples are the Alcazaba of Badajoz, Almeria, Malaga, Antequera, Jaen, Guadix, Calatayud, Merida and the Alcazaba built inside of the Alhambra.

The Alcazaba of Malaga

It is considered one of the most beautiful Alcazabas that you can visit in Spain.

It was built on the slopes of the Gibralfaro Mountain where before there were some Pheno-Punic remains. This position was a strategic point for the defense of the city.

The Alcazaba of Malaga has an area of 15.000 square meter; without any doubts, during the Muslim period it was much bigger but, part of the walls and the territory of the Haza Baja have been lost with the time.

Its was built by the Muslims who conquered the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Age.

Nevertheless, its construction process has been influenced by the historical and topographical evolutions, going through various changes that allow us to say that the Alcazaba is a monument with its own life.

Our Mission The aim of AlcazabaMalaga.com is to help spread the historic, artistic, and cultural heritage of the monumental complex of the Alcazaba and the Gibralfaro castle.
